How to Carry Yarn and Change Colors in Crochet
Color changes can take your crochet projects to the next level—but they can also be a bit intimidating if you’ve never tried it before! In today’s post, I’m sharing my personal tips for how I carry yarn between stitches and handle color changes for smooth transitions and tidy finishes.
π§Ά Carrying Yarn:
If the color you're switching away from will be used again soon and the colors are similar, I like to carry the yarn through the stitches—this keeps it handy and saves time! Just crochet right over the unused yarn as you go.
However, if the yarn will contrast strongly or won’t be needed again for a while, I fasten it off, pull it through the stitch to lock it in, and weave in the tail with the next row to keep everything secure and neat.
π¨ Changing Colors:
Start your last stitch before the color change.
When you're down to the last two loops on your hook, yarn over with the new color and pull through to complete the stitch.
Continue crocheting with the new color!
This gives a smooth color transition and prevents that little color blip that sometimes happens when switching mid-stitch.
These little techniques help keep your projects looking polished, whether you're making stripes, blocks, or intricate colorwork. π
